What an impressive start to our 2018 season with a win in the Tursa Employment & Training Men’s Open A – ANZAC Cup final on Saturday!!
Played at Crozier Oval in Lismore, our men started strongly against the Lismore Thistles side and controlled most of the first half with some accurate passing and creating numerous scoring opportunities.
Returning from suspension, Nick Key impressed the crowd with some fine attacking raids and was well supported by Matty McMahon, Zac Meldrum & Sean Brown who later picked up the Player of the Match award.
The second half was similar to the first with many scoring chances for our boys although Thistles started applying more & more pressure. They were denied again and again by a steadfast Ballina defence with Pacey and Jeremy ‘Dup’ Mitchell having solid games in the back line.
Phil Francis controlled the mid field and combined well with Tyson Price, Liam Seymour & Luke Dixon. Tex Wilson, Bailey Troughton & Duane Cahill also contributed to a very dominant Ballina side. Thanks must also go to Seb, James and Joe who helped get the Ballina team into the final.
Matt Parker kept the net clean for us and wasn’t put under too much pressure. The Thistles keeper had a very busy game although our boys did fire a few straight at him! He made some great saves throughout the match but it was during a 1 on 1 with Nick Key that he came off second-best and allowed Nick to score in the final 10 minutes.
“It was a great performance by all the boys” said coach Richard Morgan who was delighted with the 1-0 win and a positive start to their year.
Go the seahorses!!
